Your home and your DMP

We understand that for the majority of people, staying in their home is the absolute priority. So it’s important that if you own your home you continue to make your mortgage repayments.

If you own your home, the debt solutions that are available to you vary depending on the amount of equity in your property and your age.

If you have equity in your property you may be able to release this to clear your debts or you could look at downsizing. If you’d like to consider these options please call us and we’ll give you more information and advice.

FAQs

The debts included in your DMP are not secured against your house so your home cannot be repossessed if you make reduced payments to them.

If one of your DMP creditors obtains a charging order or inhibition through the courts, the debt will become secured against your house but this does not mean it will be repossessed.

If you do not keep up with payments to a mortgage or secured loan, your house may eventually be repossessed. If you are struggling to keep up with these payments, contact us for advice.

Across the credit industry and the advice sector, there are agreed guidelines on living costs. This means all budgets can be assessed fairly on the same criteria.

If any of your living costs are above or below these guideline figures, your creditors will require some further explanation

We send repayment proposals to each creditor at the start of your DMP and we send updates when required. Your creditors are sent a copy of your budget, a list of your debts, a copy of your DMP agreement and an offer of payment in writing. Copies can be sent to any creditors if requested.

We need to know the value of your house, car, shares and other assets because these affect the debt solutions that are available to you. We show monthly mortgage payments and vehicle expenses in your budget but we do not show the value of any assets.

Your creditors will probably know if you are a homeowner and can find information about this from the Land Registry.

Sometimes your creditors may contact you to suggest you reduce some of the expenses shown in your budget. This would free up extra money to pay to your debts.

If any of your expenses are above average, we will have discussed this with you when we reviewed your budget. Your budget is meant to be realistic and if your expenses are reduced too much, you would not be able to keep to it.

If you do not feel you can reduce your spending further, tell your creditor this. If you think you can, we advise you do so as it will clear your debts sooner.
