About your DMP

Sticking to a budget and managing your debts can be difficult, especially if you've never done it before. But there are things you can do to help stay in control:

  • Don't borrow more money. This will only create more problems. Instead, if you're struggling with your costs, let us know
  • Make sure that you're claiming all the benefits you're entitled to. Read our budgeting section for more information on how we can help you do this
  • Only spend money that’s in your budget
  • Always be polite to your creditors. Try to stay calm, even if they are pressuring you to pay more
  • Stay positive. Even if it feels like it's going to take a long time to clear your debts, your DMP is putting you in control of the situation
  • Consider telling your family or friends about your DMP. Letting them know about your situation could help

You can get help and support from people in similar situations by visiting the MoneySavingExpert.com 'Debt-free wannabe' forum. This is a support network where people share their experiences of becoming debt free.

FAQs

Yes. All of your unsecured, non-priority debts should be included in your DMP to make sure they are all treated fairly. Paying debts outside of your DMP is giving them preferential treatment and your other creditors may reject your DMP and take further action as a result.

If you use a bank that's linked with one of the debts on your DMP, they can take money from this towards the debt. They don't have to give you notice, and there's no way to prevent this. This is why we advise you use a bank account that isn't linked to any of your debts.

Your creditors may reject our offer of payment but they can't refuse to deal with us. Industry rules state that it's ‘unfair practice’ to refuse to work with us. Please contact us if any of your creditors have said they will not deal with us.
