Our key findings from May 2021:
- In May 2021, StepChange provided full debt advice to more than 12,000 new clients
- Life events continue to affect StepChange clients throughout the pandemic. In May 2021, most new clients cited events such as becoming unemployed, experiencing a reduction in income or hours, or an injury or health issue as main reasons for debt
- There has been an increase in the proportion of clients with children among our client population in recent months. This includes a high disproportionate number of single adults with children (22%) compared to the wider UK population (6%)
- More than one third (35%) of new clients living in the private rented sector, which continues to be the most common housing tenure type among new clients. The proportion of new clients with mortgages has started to increase in recent months, up from 11% in March to 14% in May.
