How can I get a debt management plan?

A third party provider can set up a debt management plan (DMP) if it is the best solution for you. A third party provider is a debt charity or debt management company.

Your third party provider can:


  • Review your finances
  • Help you work out a budget
  • Find out if a debt management plan is the right solution for you

During a DMP:


  • You pay your provider an affordable monthly amount
  • They share it between the people you owe

How does a DMP work?

Have you been told a DMP would be good for you? You may want to know more about how they work.

First, you work out a budget you can live on. This includes all your living costs like:


  1. Rent or mortgage payments
  2. Utility bills
  3. Food shopping

It should not include the payments you make to your debts.

Any money left over after your living expenses and priority bills are covered is used to make monthly payments to the people you owe.

You can make your own reduced payment arrangements by speaking to the people you owe. When you are on a DMP, the third party provider does this for you.
